At the age of 34 I took a good ard look at myself in the mirror and I didn’t like what I saw. I was overweight to the point where I couldn’t even see my toes when I looked down. My blood pressure was so high, if I’d walked in to a doctor’s office I would have come out with a prescription for a beta blocker, or some other blood pressure medicine. I couldn’t climb a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing and I was so stressed out, my nights were turning into days of wakefulness and my days were nightmares of exhaustion. I had a high paying job as a manager for several dance studio in Norfolk, Virginia, but it was also highly competitive. I was always afraid of losing my status.
Since there no health clubs nearby, I joined a karate school. I”d always been fascinated by the martial arts when I watched it on television, and I was also a fan of Bruce Lee in the movies. One of the things that intrigued me was the way the martial artist handled stress. They were so confident and moved with such quickness and precision, it was if they’d mastered a sixth sense or inner rhythm of themselves. Also they were trim and slim and very healthy looking……………….
Within a matter of weeks I already felt and looked better; and I was having a good time. I really got into exercise-aerobics, stretching and resistance, all three on a regular basis. The weight started to comm off quickly, and within a few months, my measurements were back to normal…………………….
I eventually moved to Baltimore, Maryland to begin training for national competitions. My instructor was a Korean in his sixties and he was very selective about his students. He could afford to be since he was was laready a wealthy man and his sole purpose was in teaching the martial arts was to train champions.
In a couple of years I’d won several competitions and then in 1978 at teh age of 39 I won the nationals decisively. No one even scored a point on me, so it was called a perfect match.
After the master had presented me with my gift (for winning) he said to me (in his Korean-English); “You think you good now”. “Yes sir” I grinned, “I am the very best.” “Well now” he retorted, “I show you, you just baby.”
This 65-year old man was challenging me to spar with him!-or at least I th ought so. I was sure I was going to embarrass my master.
“”You no blink,” he snapped. What did he mean, I wondered.
The next thing I knew I was against the wall. “I kick you quarter power. You hurt a little bit,” he grinned. “I kick you half power, you die. I kick you full power you go through the wall.”
What had just happened to me was astounding to me – here was a man in his sixties was was so fast and so strong, he had taken me totally off guard. What powers did this man that we in this country didn’t know about?
“Master would you teach me your secrets?’ I asked him.
“Only if you’re willing to go further,” he replied.
